Ronaldo and Raul Gonzalez grabbed two goals each and Michael Owen also found the net as Real Madrid kept the Spanish title race alive with an emphatic 5-0 win over Racing Santander.

“Raul was just fantastic, his best game that I have seen. He ran, he scored and he helped out (David) Beckham and (Zinadine) Zidane,” said Real coach Wanderley Luxemburgo, paying tribute to his captain, after yesterday’s match.

The 29-times Spanish champions reduced the advantage of league leaders Barcelona to just three points with three games still to go. The Catalans do have a game in hand but face a potentially tricky visit to reigning Spanish champions Valencia, who are still fighting for a place in next season’s Champions League, today.

Ronaldo then provided the service for the England international to find the net from close range. The Brazilian got on the scoresheet himself from the penalty spot eight minutes later after Racing’s Israeli international goalkeeper Dudu Aouate had flattened him on the edge of the area.

It was not a classic goal but Ronaldo will remember it all the same as it was his 100th goal in the top flight of Spanish football.

Raul got Real’s third after 54 minutes with the Racing defence run ragged, and added his second after 71 minutes, after assistance from Owen. Ronaldo finished off the rout in injury time for his 20th goal of the season.

The defeat left floundering Racingstill not safe from relegation.
