
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA, July 22: Lisa Raymond, returning to the site of the first of her two NCAA singles titles, defeated Francesca Lubiani 6-4, 6-3 last night in the first round of the Bank of the West tournament.
Raymond won the 1992 collegiate title at Stanford, where she went 11-0 while playing for the University of Florida. Yesterday8217;s match was her first as a professional at Stanford.
Raymond, seeded eighth in the 450,000 outdoor tournament, had few supporters in the stands when she won her 1992 title at the home of archrival Stanford. On Monday, she was cheered by hundreds of spectators.
She plays Russia8217;s Elena Likhovtseva in the second round.
Also last night, Linda Wild defeated Lori McNeil 6-4, 7-5.
Gumy, Volkov move up
KITZBUHEL: Urnan Gumy of Argentina and Alexander Volkov of Russia have advanced in the 535,000 Generali Open clay court tennis tournament.
Gumy, 75th in the ATP rankings and No 91 Volkov, played yesterday while the tournament8217;s top players sat out the opening day.
Gumy defeated Wolfgang Schranz of Austria 6-4, 6-4, while Volkov eliminated Omar Camporese of Italy 6-3, 7-5.
Oleg Ogorodov of Uzbekistan ousted another player in ATP8217;s top 100, No 95 Richard Fromberg of Australia, 6-7 6-8, 6-4, 6-3.
Hrbaty beats qualifier
UMAG: Fifth seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia has defeated Spanish qualifier Sergi Duran 6-3, 7-6 7-4 in the opening round of the 400,000 Croatia Open tournament.
Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, ranked second among juniors earlier this year, defeated Andrei Rybalko of Ukraine 6-4, 6-4. The 18-year-old Croat clinched a close match when Rybalko double faulted in the second set.
In other matches, Italy8217;s Marzio Martelli, ranked 99th, defeated Zeljko Krajan of Croatia 6-1, 7-5 and Andrei Merinov of Russia defeated Romanian Razvan Sabau 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
