In another pinprick to Uttaranchal Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari, state Congress president Harish Rawat has decided to constitute an ethics committee to keep an eye on the conduct of ministers, legislators as well as party office-bearers.
Tiwari and Rawat have become sworn enemies ever since the former was chosen over the latter for the Chief Minister’s post.
Rawat, who is not yet clear about the mechanism of the committee, claimed it the committee function on the directives given by party president Sonia Gandhi to bring transparency in the working of the Congress governments at the Guwhati conclave of Chief Ministers.
He said the committee would give advice and suggestions to ministers, legislators and party workers on corruption and act as a self-monitoring system of the party.
Denying any attempt by party organisation to keep a check on the state government, Rawat said that as its first step, the committee would request all ministers, party legislators and office-bearers to give details of their properties and assets. However, he was not sure the committee would be able to take any disciplinary action against any defaulting minister or party leader.
