KOCHI, SEPT 21: The remarks by Congress leader Vayalar Ravi, questioning the Guruvayur temple tantri‘s action in performing a punyaham (purification rites) reportedly after his son offered worship at the temple, border on contempt of court, according to T P Kelu Nambiar, senior advocate of the Kerala High court.
Nambiar, legal adviser of the Guruvayur Devaswom, said in a statement here that Ravi should get his son declared as a Hindu by resorting to appropriate legal proceedings.
The question involved in the controversy was neither political nor communal, he said adding it was a ritualistic and religious ceremony and personalities do not count in a matter like this.
The son of a Hindu father and a Christian mother entered the temple and when the tantri came to know of it he performed the punyaham. Delay in performing the same would have had the effect of complicating the situation from the ritualistic point of view, he said.
Nambiar opined that a Division Bench of the court had earlier held that “the tantri was the final authority in all religious matters. All concerned should remind themselves of these aspects before making allegations against the tantri, his act and conduct”.
Ravi is reportedly planning to file a defamation suit against the temple authorities for holding the purification rite after his son, Ravi Krishnan and daughter-in-law offered worship at the temple soon after their marriage.
The tantri had justified his decision saying the rite was performed as he had doubts over the Hindu credentials of Ravi’s son as his mother Mercy Ravi was a non-Hindu.
