The wife of former IAS officer Rathikant Basu, Ranjita, was detained by the CID (Crime) Economic Offences Wing here last week in a cheating case. She was released after she produced documents showing that she had obtained anticipatory bail.The EOW had filed a case in February 2004 against Ranjita Basu and her company, Broadcast World Wide (BWW), floated in Ahmedabad two years ago.Ranjita is accused of inviting investment worth Rs 8 lakh from Ahmedabad-based Chartered Accountant Ashok Chadaj in her company by promising a public issue and listing on the stock exchange. She had also borrowed a large amount of money from Gujarat Venture Finance Limited (GVFL), the main promoter of the company. But the company never went public.The complaint says that when the investors started demanding their money, Ranjita transferred some bogus shares in their name without the permission of GVFL and without the company being listing on the stock exchange.A police complaint had been filed in the city against Ranjita and her company. The case was taken over by the CID and offences were registered.However, Ranjita has not faced any action so far. Her arrest incidentally came soon after her daughter, designer Nandita Basu, presented a crop of T-shirts at the recent Lakme India Fashin Week condeming the Gujarat riots and the Narendra Modi government’s role in them.
