ANOTHER OPEN OPTION

Mumbai’s Vinayak Mane, 22, who had been Gautam Gambhir’s opening partner in the India U-19 team not too long ago, came up with an unbeaten 111 in the second innings against the Railways to add his name to the long list of contenders for the opening slot beside Virender Sehwag.

An eye on young Venu

Andhra’s Venugopala Rao continues to make waves. Following his first innings 140, the stylish middle-order batsman recorded an unbeaten 60 in the second essay against Madhya Pradesh in their rain-affected game at Indore. And in between, he showed his skill with the ball too, taking 4-53 with his off-breaks.

Lodhgar comes into the reckoning

Murtaza Lodhgar, turning out for Bengal in only his second match, was the surprise match-winner for his team against the formidable Karnataka side. The 27-year-old finished with match-winning figures of 11-117 (6-28 and 5-89) to help his team begin the new season with an outright win. He joins the growing list of left-arm orthodox spinners around the world who are making a mark, and though he still has some distance to go before challenging Murali Kartik, here’s a name to look out for. Delhi’s Rahul Sanghvi — not in contention though — also impressed, claiming 5 for 79 in Gujarat’s second innings.
