MUMBAI, April 2: Apprentice SP Ranjane was at his best and had a memorable hat-trick by claiming the first three races on the 41st day of Mumbai meeting held on Thursday at Mahalakshmi Race Course. However, none of his winners were the public choices and therefore race goers could not share his joy.

Amyntor who was blindly backed in The Nawabzada Rashiduzzaffar Khan Trophy returned last in the field of four under the handling of jockey Aslam Kader.

Happy Days, Roman Queen, Sea Saga and Splendid Ann fell like yellow leaves and added financial miseries to their followers.

BETTING TAXES RAISED

  • The Indian horse-racing faces manifold problems and is slowly losing interest among the as is evident from the alarmingly falling attendance. The Government of Maharashtra compounded it further by unilaterally and spontaneously increasing the betting tax with effect from April 1, 1998.
  • It should be noted that while the bookmakers and the racing public were given notice only today, the Government notification announced theeffective date as April 1.

The increase is five per cent of the bets laid with the bookmakers which was at present 15 per cent. Thus the race-goers will have to pay altogether 26 per cent, including six per cent RWITC commission.

The high raise is for the win and place bets with the tote. The 10 per cent tax was given a 100 per cent increase and is now 20 per cent. The pool bets will be deducting five per cent extra which is hither to first 15 per cent. While there was all-round resentment by the racegoers there seems no likelihood of any amendments.
