BETTING TAXES RAISED

It should be noted that while the bookmakers and the racing public were given notice only today, the Government notification announced theeffective date as April 1.

The increase is five per cent of the bets laid with the bookmakers which was at present 15 per cent. Thus the race-goers will have to pay altogether 26 per cent, including six per cent RWITC commission.

The high raise is for the win and place bets with the tote. The 10 per cent tax was given a 100 per cent increase and is now 20 per cent. The pool bets will be deducting five per cent extra which is hither to first 15 per cent. While there was all-round resentment by the racegoers there seems no likelihood of any amendments.
