PUNE, Sept 11: Randeep Bhatti’s solitary goal against Modern High School proved the decider for St. Joseph High School as they annexed the Poona District Multi-Games Sports Council (PDMGSC) under-14 hockey title here today.

At the Poligras Stadium (Nehrunagar), heavy rain delayed proceedings for almost two hours, before the organisers were compelled to complete the match on a water-logged pitch.

The Modern lads looked ambitious from the start but what let them down was their forward-line who no doubt made in-roads but failed in their finishing. In the fourth minute of the play Vishal Bhosale had the first shy at the Joseph’s goal, but defender Lamba Surjit timely interception diverted the ball out.

St. Joseph’s boasted of an equally good forward-line which had Randeep Bhatti, Christy Zacharia and Richard Salvi torment the Modern defence time and again. The entire first-half was a case of missed opportunities with either side making it into the circle but not scoring, resulting in a goalless tie.

In the second-half the game was confined between the both the 25-yard zones.

Amidst defensive play, Randeep in a break-away move initiated by Christy Zacharia who managed to trickle in a free-hit just on the brink of the circle. Randeep seeking the opportunity trapped and finished off with a rasping shot.

Patrick’s-vidya bhavan in final: In the under-17 section, St. Patrick’s High School out-classed Loyola High School 5-1 to enter the finals, with Joseph Hiwale making it a one-man-show knocking in three goals. Loyola had their backs to the wall after 20 minutes when Joseph scored twice (15th and 19th minute) to end the first half on a happy note.

Joseph scored his first when he got a fine through-pass from centre-half Agnello Lobo and later made it a solo effort for Strike-2.

After the regular break Loyola lost their confidence when left-in Amit Khode made it 3-0 after being provided a pass from Agnello inside the circle.

Loyola pulled one back when Deepak Murarkar scored off a penalty-stroke, which was awarded for a wrong tackle by defender Pradeep Kasab.

Patrick’s surged further via Pradeep Kasab while Joseph rounded up the tally.

The other semi-final had Modern H.S exit despite winning their match against Vidya Bhavan 2-0 via the tie-breaker. The reason: fielding a player whose name failed to figure in the original list provided to the organisers. The match completed under protest lodged by the Vidya Bhavan coach saw the protest go in their favour later as the Modern official accepted who also provided in writing about his guilt.

Poona college thron out: In the Under-19 section Poona College was thrown out of the meet as one of their player Sachin Godse was found over-aged. The verification was done by the District Sports Officer (DSO) Janak Tekale who personally went to the college checked the age. Incidentally, Poona College won their tie against Nowrosjee Wadia 3-1 via the tie-breaker on Thursday.
