A year after his sensational escape from Tihar Jail, Sher Singh Rana, the alleged accused in Phoolan Devi’s murder, surfaced in a TV channel mocking the Delhi Police about his escape and claiming that he was in Afghanistan to bring back the remains of Rajput warrior Prithiviraj Chauhan. Since the telecast last night, the Uttaranchal police has sounded an alert.
Rana claimed that after his escape he was helped by a Congress leader who provided him shelter and money. Later, he went to Afghanistan with the help of Subhash Thakur, a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, now lodged in Varanasi jail.
Rana showing footage of his claimed Afghanistan tour said he went to Kandahar and then to Ghazni, posing as a Pakistani. Sporting a beard, Rana was shown digging, what he claimed were the mortal remains of Chauhan. He was also shown visiting several other places in Afghanistan. Rana mocked the Delhi Police security at Tihar and said he would write a letter to them about his escape.
Uttaranchal police officials claim that Rana is a master manipulator and nothing could be said about the authenticity of his visit to Afghanistan. Uttaranchal Additional DGP Kaviraj Negi said the force has been put on alert.
