SURAT, July 5: The Katargam Water Works Intake Well was declared open on Sunday by Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana. Built at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore, by the Surat Municipal Corporation, the well is expected to provide drinking water to a major part of the residents of the city.
Addressing the gathering, Rana said providing water to every village in the country was on top of his party’s national agenda and even the prime minister was keen to see that nobody was deprived of basic amenities like drinking water. Praising the civic body’s efforts in providing piped water to its vast population, the Union minister said the corporation had spent a huge amount to augment water supply in the city.
On the occasion, State Water Supply Minister Narotambhai Patel said adequate water supply was the first and foremost necessity of the city, which had been solved by the civic body to some extend.
Patel said the state government had worked out an elaborate scheme to provide water supply in Kutch-Saurashtra and north Gujarat region. The scheme, at an estimated cost of Rs 5000 crore, would supply water though pipes from the Narmada to about 8000 villages. A 2700 km long pipeline would be laid for the purpose, he added.
Mayor Navneet Jariwala reiterated the SMC’s commitment to provide piped water to every resident of the city by 2001.
State Municipal Finance Board Chairman and former mayor Fakirbhai Chauhan, Standing Committee Chairman Natu Soma Patel, Deputy Mayor Dr Kishor Lakhani, Water Committee Chairman Dr Ashok Doctor, Municipal Commissioner S Jagadeesan also spoke at the function.
MLA Atma Ram Parmar, former standing committee chairmen Narendra Gandhi and Ajay Choksi, standing committee member Shankarlal Chevli were among those present on the occasion.
