JANUARY 6: Pivotals led by cyclical stocks rallied on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today on emergence of buying support lifting the Sensex partially up by about 65 points. The sentiment was also boosted by fresh purchases by foreign funds and hectic short covering.Sensex (BSE sensitive index) opened sharply up at 5424.21 and later moved irregularly in a wide range of 5489.86 and 5391.33 before closing at 5421.53 with a handsome gain of 64.53 points or 1.20 per cent compared to the previous level of 5357.00. The BSE-100 index was fractionally up by 2.83 points to 2835.83 from the previous close of 2833.00.Brokers said several IT scrips, however, attracted profit-taking. Operators, who accumulated technology stocks during the past a few days, resorted to heavy unloading in the light of imposition of volatility margins by the exchange authorities. Operators centred their attention on economy stocks like BHEL, Grasim, MTNL, TISCO, Larsen, Reliance, SBI, TELCO and others.FIIs too were picking up Indian stocks and reportedly made heavy purchases in scrips like Reliance, TISCO and ITC. They, however, had turned heavy sellers in software sector to book profits at higher levels after the Nasdaq composite index of the US crashed. Besides cyclical stocks, select FMCG stocks were also in the limelight on good buying support from players.In the specified group, 25 scrips including four index heavyweights like ITC, MTNL, Hindalco and Grasim were locked in the upper circuit filter after exhausting the daily limit. However, NIIT and Infosys Tech hit the lower price band.Satyam Computer clocked the highest turnover of Rs 536.20 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 4158.27 crore sharply lower than Rs 5205.47 registered yesterday. Satyam Computer gained by Rs 43 to Rs 2483, Reliance by Rs 7.45 to Rs 292.95, HFCL by Rs 59.10 to Rs 798, Bajaj Auto by Rs 28.40 to Rs 400.50, BHEL by Rs 12 to Rs 224, BSES by Rs 9.60 to Rs 203.60, Grasim by Rs 34.35 to Rs 464.35, GACL by Rs 19.20 to Rs 322.70, Hindustan Lever by Rs 114.50 to Rs 2304.50, Hindalco by Rs 77.70 to Rs 1049.65, ITC by Rs 58.35 to Rs 788.35, MTNL by Rs 19.40 to Rs 262.40, SBI by 10.30 to 259, TELCO by Rs 9.60 to Rs 221.50 and TISCO by Rs 11.15 to Rs 168.However, Zee Telefilms dropped by Rs 82 to Rs 1107, Pentafour Software by Rs 104.60 to Rs 1329, Infosys Tech by Rs 1244.55 to Rs 14,312.85, M&M by Rs 7 to Rs 518, NIIT by Rs 262.80 to Rs 3022.55 and Ranbaxy Lab by Rs 37.50 to Rs 945.25.
