In a new twist to the controversy over the Calcutta High Court ban on rallies, the Association of Retired Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts of India today sent a strong message to the state government, saying it should ‘‘stop personal attacks on Justice Amitava Lala’’.

‘‘The developments and attacks on the judiciary since the single bench issued the order are indicative of the breakdown of the constitutional machinery in the state,’’ said association secretary-general Justice (Retd) D.K. Basu.

The association, that has its headquarters at Delhi, said that ‘‘the appeal and vilification campaign cannot go together. We condemn that while the state government moved the court with an appeal, political parties launched personal attacks on the judge which amounts to an attack on the high court.’’

Justice Basu said: ‘‘While one can always criticise an order or a judgement, which is fair enough, there’s no room for personal attacks on a judge as the judiciary, as a system, has enough avenues for an appeal against an order or review of a judgement,’’ Justice Basu told The Indian Express.

‘‘We also read today of an Opposition leader (Trinamool Congress’ Pankaj Banerjee) saying the CPI(M)-led government had browbeaten the court into granting a stay by the division bench,’’ Justice Basu said, adding: ‘‘does this not indicate total disrespect towards the judiciary?’’
