PATIALA, June 12: Government Rajindra Hospital, the prestigious 1200-bed health care institution of Punjab had its third Medical Superintendent (MS) in less than one month as Rajesh Chander took over as Medical Superintendent, here today.

Yogesh Marwaha was appointed MS by the Health Department on May 15 while S.S. Sidhu, a senior professor of anatomy in the medical college here was already functioning as MS. Till June 4 the hospital had two medical superintendents when the health department ordered that Sidhu be relieved of his additional charge as MS. On June 5 the government ordered Rajesh Chander’s appointment as MS and posted Marwaha as Deputy Medical Superintendent.

According to sources, the Punjab Government wants to settle the issue of control of the three hospitals attached to the three medical colleges at Patiala, Amritsar and Faridkot. The view in this favour is that since these three hospitals are attached to the medical colleges, these are teaching hospitals and as such their control vests in the research and medical education department. Presently a large number of posts in the three hospitals are lying vacant that include posts of nursing staff also. These posts are generally filled up by requisitioning of staff from the Health and Family Welfare Department. At times this staff is not made available by the health department and the posts keep lying vacant.

In this context, sources here pointed out that almost half a dozen posts of radiographers in government Rajindra Hospital had been lying vacant as not many radiographers were keen to be shifted from rural hospitals to this hospital. If these three hospitals come under the control of the research and medical education department, these posts could be filled up directly by the medical education department.

Another view in this favour is stated to be that if these hospitals are under the control of only research and medical education department, there would be no overlapping in the matter of posting of staff like the one when the Rajindra Hospital had two medical superintendents for almost a fortnight. While S.S. Sidhu was working on the orders of the secretary, Research and Medical Education, Marwaha’s posting had been ordered by the health department.

Meanwhile, according to sources, work in the MS office has been adversely affected during the last one month because of the uncertain conditions prevailing at the top level in the hospital administration.
