CALCUTTA, January 4: Assam, with the help of Rajender Singh’s century, scored 360 in their first innings in the East Zone Ranji Trophy match against Bengal at the Eden Gardens here today. At stumps, Bengal were 96 for three with Rohan Gavaskar unbeaten on 40.

Utpal Chatterjee and Ajoy Das used the Eden wicket well to restrict Assam’s score, after the North-Eastern side appeared headed for a bigger total. Chatterjee grabbed five wickets while Das conceded just two runs for his three wickets in his three-over spell.

Brief scores: Assam (1st innings): 360 (Rajender Singh 143, Iqbal Kan 74, Utpal Chatterje 5-101, Ajoy Das 3-2); Bengal (1st innings): 96 for three (Rohan Gavaskar batting 40, Gautam Dutta 2-32).

Arfi props up Bihar

AGARTALA: Bihar managed to reach a comfortable total of 370 all out propelled by a strokeful century (101) by S Arfi in the second day of the first innings of the four-day Ranji Trophy match against hosts Tripura at Narsinggarh School Ground today.

Resuming at their overnight score of 212 for five, Arfi and S Prakash (32 run out) steadied Bihar’s innings with a 131-run sixth wicket partnership.
