Railway Board chairman I.I.M.S. Rana today admitted that the relief and rescue operations after the Rajdhani Express accident at Rafiganj in Bihar last month were late.

‘‘But it was a major accident and chaos could not be prevented. We are now taking a series of measures to prevent accidents and provide quick relief in case one happens,’’ Rana told The Indian Express after a meeting of Railway Board members and senior officials at the Eastern Railways.

The meeting discussed at length the various aspects of railway safety and how they can be implemented. ‘‘From improving the engines, signalling system, railway tracks to training personnel, we talked of everything that relates to the safety of the passengers, whose lives we are responsible for,’’ Rana said. To tackle post-accident situations, the Board has constituted a four-member disaster management committee.
