NEW DELHI, JAN 23: Vinod Babbar, the younger brother of Bollywood actor Raj Babbar, was found dead on his bed inside a room of his flat in Noida on Monday morning. While the grieving relatives say he used to drink excessively and could have died due to some ailment, police are suspicious and have ordered a post-mortem.

The body was discovered at 8.30am at the 3B Sector 15 A flat by his wife Baljeet Babbar. She had gone to wake up Vinod Babbar after sending the three children to school. ‘‘He could have died of excessive drinking,’’ Raj Babbar said. ‘‘He had liver problems and was taking medicines.’’

However, Noida Superintendent of Police Piyush Srivastava says: ‘‘Since the body was disturbed and had been taken to the hospital we have ordered a post-mortem. Inquiries have also revealed that the husband and wife had some differences over his excessive drinking.’’ But so far police have not received any complaint from anyone suspecting mischief, he added.

Vinod Babbar’s parents had gone to Mumbai and were expected back today. However, some of the relatives were staying at house overnight. Officials who saw the body said the the face had turned blue ‘‘as if he was poisoned.’’

‘‘When a body turns blue there is a possibility that the person could have died of poisoning,’’ a police official said. ‘‘But, normally, in cases of poisoning even the nails turn blue. In this case there was no so such staining,’’ he said.

Despite the post-mortem being conducted at the Hindon mortuary this evening, the cause of death of the 46-year-old businessman could not be ascertained. The forensic doctors have preserved the viscera for further examination to find out the cause of the death. Gurpreet Singh, the brother-in-law of Vinod, said:

‘‘Last night, he had drinks and dinner and went off to sleep. At around 10.30am, he was taken to Kailash Hospital, where the doctors said he had died two hours ago.’’
