At least seven people have died due to a confirmed outbreak of gastroenteritis in Raipur. Two cholera cases have also been reported and over 40 people suffering from gastroenteritis admitted to various hospitals.
Most of the families, affected by gastroenteritis, are that of labourers, rickshawpullers and others living in jhuggis. For the past 15 days, jhuggis are frequently flooded by rain water and spillage polluting drinking water sources.
Even as the government says there is no cause of panic, Raipur Collector C.K. Khaitan has already ordered sealing of 18 handpumps and seven wells in Rawabhata locality after water was found to be highly contaminated. The municipal corporation has been asked to supply drinking water to the affected families by tankers.
State Health Secretary Alok Shukla has sent a report to the Health Ministry about detection of the cholera cases and preventive measures being taken by the Chhattisgarh government. In the medical college hospital, over 100 gastroenteritis patients were admitted in the past two weeks. Over a dozen other hospitals in the town have been getting patients everyday.
