The “minor” ankle injury of Ramesh Powar during practice at Chadwin Park yesterday has turned out to be more than just that.
Today, while Indian captain Rahhul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell went ahead with a practice match against a Jamaica XI here, Powar was missing from the line-up.
Meanwhile, after Dravid won the toss and elected to bat Virender Sehwag departed none too late, scoring 33. Dravid, too scored a modest 31. That was before Suresh Raina and Mohammad Kaif led a recovery and pushed India to 289 for seven in 50 overs.
At the Jarrett Park Sehwag hit out well (four fours and a six), but did get a ‘life’ early. It was also another opening adventure by Dravid (Robin Uthappa wasn’t in the line-up) but the captain too was unimpressive. Fast bowler Jermaine Lawson picked up Yuvraj Singh before the all-rounder could do much damage. He made 18.
Raina and Kaif steadied the boat, pushing India past 200 before a spell of har hitting by Dhoni lightened up things.
The Indians also left out spinner paceman S. Sreesanth from the tour-opener.
West Indies retain winning combination: Meanwhile, the West Indies have retained their match winning combination which played in the last two games against Zimbabwe for the first two cricket one-dayers against India beginning here on Thursday.
