Aakash Chopra has a 3-D ‘NOW’ graphic pasted inside the cover of his kit bag. For him, it’s important to score tons, not just runs (as his Delhi coach Madan Lal expects) to get back into reckoning.
At another corner of the ground, another former Indian opener and Railways skipper Sanjay Bangar has his focus just on the crucial Ranji match, starting at the Karnail Singh Stadium tomorrow.
But there is another set of boys for who the stakes are totally different. They are people like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Kartik and JP Yadav.
“Admit it or not, it plays on your mind, always. It’s either disappointment or comfort when a player enters a match knowing his ‘selection fate’ with the Indian team,” says Chopra. “When you are selected or approaching a big tour, you tend to keep that as priority and plan accordingly.”
Railways have had no specific plan for Sehwag and Gambhir, “Each bowler has his own plans, we just plan to stick to our basics and play good cricket,” says Bangar.
Kartik will surely have a few plans up his sleeves and on a wicket that promises turn, it will be an interesting contest between him and Sehwag; the Delhi skipper is likely to play as a middle-order batsman. Rest assured, there will be no complacency from the Test duo either.
