For coolie Rangappa and his wife Budamma, it was surprise and embarrassment as Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, entered their shanty in a slum cluster here on Friday but the young Congress leader was visibly moved by the plight of the family. On his way to unveil a statue of his father and late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi here, Gandhi stopped by the industrial area and strolled into the roadside slum.Jumping the roadside drain, Gandhi reached the shanty where Rangappa, his wife and three children stay. All the three children lined up before Gandhi, who is on a tour of Karnataka ahead of assembly polls, and could not control their tears as they explained their plight to the Amethi MP.Rahul was moved when he found out that the children were suffering from eye infection.“He bent and peeped into our tent and called us outside. I had nothing to offer him. I am embarrassed that we had to welcome him in such a place,” said Budamma, who is a daily wage worker in a nearby mill.
