In a clear bid to take advantage of the present turmoil within the saffron brigade following the resignation of state BJP chief Kalraj Mishra, UP Chief Minister Mayawati today said that her decision to nullify the reservation policy introduced by predecessor Rajnath Singh was taken at senior BJP leader Om Prakash Singh’s behest.

‘‘The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting where BJP ministers were also present and they all agreed that in the interest of Dalits and Backwards some way out of the existing reservation policy should be found. There is no point in concluding that the decision was taken by me to expose Rajnath Singh,’’ she told newsmen at her official residence this afternoon.

Her statement came after Rajnath rapped her for junking his policy of providing separate quotas for Most Backwards and Most Dalits. ‘‘The interest of the people, and not an individual (read Rajnath), is more important and in people’s interest it must be scrapped,’’ she said.

At the Cabinet meeting, the move was approved not only by Lalji Tandon, but even Hukum Singh, the architect of the new reservation policy, she added. Stating that her party favoured separate reservation for Most Backwards and Most Dalits, she said her government would move the Supreme Court to get the stay on the law vacated.

Reacting to Mayawati’s move to junk the policy, Rajnath had said he would get the stay vacated at his own cost. Mayawati’s narration of the ‘‘truth’’ has played an incendiary role in the ongoing infighting in the state BJP, with senior leaders blaming each other for the debacle in the Assembly polls. Fed up with the infighting, state BJP chief Kalraj Mishra submitted his resignation recently. ‘‘The party could not perform as there was no unity among top four state BJP leaders,’’ he said announcing his decision to step down.
