Basu Bhattacharya is dead

MUMBAI: Hindi cinema’s towering personality Basu Bhattacharya, who carved a niche for himself as a sensitive filmaker concerned with intricate human relationships, died early today after a cardiac arrest at the age of 64. His end came at 0030 hours at the Leelavati hospital in Bandra in north-west Mumbai, where he was admitted for treatment of pancreatitis.

Pol Pot captured

PHNOM PENH: Khmer Rouge strongman Pol Pot has been captured by his guerrilla comrades-turned enemies, the rebels said in a radio broadcast today. “Pol Pot has been captured,” the radio, which is apparently run by the Khmer Rouge faction which broke with Pol Pot earlier this month, reported.

Mongolian president

BEIJING: Nashagyn Bagabandi was today sworn in as the second directly-elected president of Mongolia. Bagabandy, 47, scored an overwhelming victory in the May 18 presidential election over Punsalmaagiyn Ochirbat, the incumbent president who had won Mongolia’s first-ever direct election to the top post, Xinhua news agency reported from Ulan Bator.
