BEIJING, November 9: Russia and China will bury the last vestiges of the border dispute, sign a mega nuclear power deal and discuss ways to revive the stalled trade ties during the visit of Russian President Boris Yeltsin which began on Sunday. Yeltsin’s whistle-stop state visit includes a summit with President Jiang Zemin.

Assam mishap

GUWAHATI: Twenty-one people were killed and 25 others injured, eight of them critically, when the truck in which they were travelling plunged into a rivulet and overturned near Hawaipur in Assam’s hill district of Karbi Anglong on Saturday night. Reports said that the driver lost control near the approach of a bridge.

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kesri Nath Tripathi has said he is prepared to initiate criminal proceedings against those MLAs who were involved in violence in the House during trust vote last month. “I am open to the idea of criminal action and will do whatever I deem necessary in the circumstances, including identifying the guilty MLAs,” Tripathi said in an interview.

JAIPUR: At least 80 people were arrested in connection with Saturday’s clash between two groups in a village in Jhalawar district of Rajasthan. The situation was tense on Sunday at Bakani village, where nearly 70 people, including 20 policemen, were injured in the clash, which occurred when members of a community allegedly demolished a wall at a place of worship.

Bahuguna fast

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Power Y K Alagh on Sunday left for Tehri to persuade noted environment activist Sunderlal Bahuguna to end his fast demanding re-examination of various aspects of the Tehri hydro-electric project by the government. Bahuguna has been on a `prayerful fast’ since October 2 seeking re-examination of the safety, ecological and environmental aspects relating to the project. He has also suggested that the government should order stoppage of work at the site.
