IAS officer faces probe in powerloom fraud
MUMBAI: For a year-and-a-half, he worked hard at spinning a fortune from the Mahatma Phule Backward Class Development Corporation. Three years later, the State Government is knitting together the details of the powerloom scandal which made M B Appalwar, senior IAS officer and incumbent secretary in the General Administration Department, richer by crores of rupees, allegedly misappropriated during his tenure as managing director of the corporation. Now he faces an inquiry for misuse of office.
Goa imbroglio
PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Dr Wilfred D’souza today said he has not yet received the copy of the order disqualifying him and nine other members of the Goa Rajiv Congress Party from the membership of State Legislative Assembly by Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo yesterday. “I am still waiting for a copy of the order,” D’Souza told newsmen here to a query on whether he planned to move the court to challenge the Speaker’s verdict .

Ireland blast
BELFAST: Police confirmed 21 people were killed when a car bomb exploded without warning in a crowded shopping street in a Northern Ireland town today where thousands of people were gathering for a festival. Dozens more were injured in the blast in the town of Omagh, according to a BBC report.
Dalits held
HYDERABAD: City police today detained leaders of various Dalit organisations who were trying to take out a procession in protest against the recent killings of Dalits in Vempenta village of Andhra Pradesh. Condemning the arrest, Dalit leaders said police prevented thousands of activists from participating in the protest rally besides arresting over 170 of them.

MIDNAPUR: Six CPI-M supporters were beaten up allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists during aprocession at Turka village in Midnapur today. A large number of vehicles were stranded on the Digha-Midnapur road as CPI-M activists staged a blockade at Thakurta to protest against the incident.
IOC fire
ASSAM: Fire in the last of the seven tanks containing kerosene oil at the Indian Oil Corporation depot here in Nagaon district has been completely extinguished, according to senior IOC officials here today. The last of the seven tanks which caught fire sanked early this morning after the flames died down raging for nearly 85 hours since August 11.
