
Three burnt to death, 47 hurt in bus mishaps
PERAMBALUR: Three people, including a woman were charred to death and 41 others injured when a State Transport Corporation bus burst into flames after it hit a roadside tree and overturned at Chepakkam on the Tiruchirapalli-Chennai national highway, near here. The mishap occurred when the bus driver lost control while trying to avoid a motorcyclist. In another mishap, six passengers of a private bus were injured when the vehicle fell into a roadside ditch at Thuraimangalam, near here. All the injured were admitted to the government hospital here, police said.
Quattrocchi case
NEW DELHI: Further hearing on anticipatory bail application of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, charged by the CBI with having received at least US 7.34 million as commission in Bofors gun deal, would be taken up by the Delhi high court tomorrow. Quattrocchi, presently residing in Malaysia had filed the anticipatory bail application through his counsel hereafter a special CBI court had issued non-bailable arrest warrant against him last year.The agency, which had failed to secure his extradition from Malaysia even after former CBI director Joginder Singh8217;s visit to Kuala Lumpur, had strongly opposed his bail plea during two previous hearings.
GUWAHATI: The ULFA has criticised Assam Sahitya Sabha president Nagen Saikia for trying to arrange negotiations between the outfit and the government. 8220;Saikia8217;s efforts at negotiation is a veiled attempt to cover up his weakness. When he was a Rajya Sabha member he had only mildly protested against the atrocities on women by the Army, but when the government did not heed his protest he did not dare to resign8221;, ULFA chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa alleged in a fax message received here.

NEW DELHI: KC Pant, chairman of the Task Force constituted for the National Security Council, on Sunday said there was a growing opinion that India should have a minimum credible nucleardeterrent. 8220;We are surrounded by missiles and there is no reason why the work that our scientists have done to develop missiles should not be carried forward,8221; Pant told a private TV channel. 8220;A large number of experts have pointed out that we are surrounded by nuclear weapons and missiles. Therefore, they have emphasised the need for this country having a minimum credible nuclear deterrence. And this opinion is growing all the time,8221; Pant said.
