ANKARA, JUNE 6: At least two people died and 26 were injured in an earthquake that rocked Cankiri province northeast of Ankara on Tuesday, Anatolia News Agency reported.

When the earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, hit Cankiri on of the death jumped from a window in panic. The other was killed near Ankara, where frightened residents rushed out of buildings into the streets.

Dozens of buildings collapsed in villages in the quake zone.

The 30-second tremor occurred at 5:41 am and was felt in Ankara, Bolu in the northwest, Kayseri in the centre of Turkey and neighbouring regions as far away as the Black Sea coast, a news channel reported.

The epicentre was at Cerkes in Cankiri province, about 100 km north of the capital.

Two violent earthquakes hit northwest Turkey in August and November last year, killing more than 20,000 people.
