Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network planned to attack the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, using hijacked airliners, The Washington Times reported on Monday.

The potential targets included nuclear powered submarines and ships, the newspaper said.

Pak asked to explain link to suspects
Islamabad: The Pakistani government was being asked by politicians and the US to explain why several Al-Qaeda suspects have been found in the homes of members of the Jamaat-e-Islami, following the arrest of Al-Qaeda’s Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

‘‘The Pakistani government is under pressure from the US to explain the pattern suggesting links between Al-Qaeda and Jamaat-I-Islami (JI),’’ a senior security official said. Mohammed was nabbed on Saturday from the house of an activist of JI’s women’s wing. (AFP)

Intelligence reports about the threat to the naval base were sent to senior United States officials in the past two weeks and coincided with reports that Al-Qaeda was planning a major attack, the newspaper reported.

The CIA had no immediate comment on the report. A spokesman for the Pentagon was not immediately available.

The Washington Times cited officials familiar with the intelligence reports as saying that Al-Qaeda was planning to take aim at Pearl Harbour because of its symbolic value. Pearl Harbour was bombed by the Japanese, which led to the United States’ involvement in World War II.

The newspaper said another reason Qaeda considered targeting Pearl Harbour was because its military facilities are open from the air.
