The wife of Abhijit Sinha, an officer of the Central Excise Department who committed suicide under mysterious circumstances after he was picked up by the police on the charge of having links with Naxals, has lodged an FIR with the Dum Dum police accusing six police officers of ‘‘abetment to suicide’’.

They include three IPS and two West Bengal Police Service officers who came to pick up Abhijit from his Dum Dum residence on July 4. Manasi Sinha says after he was released, her husband seemed seriously upset and behaved abnormally. A day later, he went out in the morning and later his mutilated body was found on the railway track.

Meanwhile, the family members of Science College professor Kausik Ganguly, also arrested for suspected PWG links, today moved a petition in the SDJM court of Midnapore praying that he be brought to Calcutta and given medical treatment as he had sustained injuries in his legs during ‘‘torture’’ by the police.

Moloy Sinha, the father of Manasi who is himself a DSP with the state CID, said: ‘‘At first the police refused to accept our compalaint. SDPO Belghoria, Basab Dasgupta, instructed that since the complaint involved higher officers, they should wait for instructions from higher authorities. After a lots of arguments, the officer in-charge agreed and accepted the FIR.’’ But till late in the evening, Moloy Sinha had not given any record of the FIR being officially lodged with the thana.

And there was no indication either of the police acting on the FIR, said Sinha. Himself a police officer, he pointed out that according to the CrPC, as soon as an FIR is accepted, the police must act on it. ‘‘Under normal circumstances, the police arrest common people if an FIR is lodged, but now they are acting in a different manner as the complaint is against police officials,’’ Sinha said.

Attempts by The Indian Express to get an official confirmation on the FIR proved futile. ‘‘There are hundreds of complaints every day. I haven’t seen any such FIR and cases are usually dealt with on the basis of their merit. Maybe this case doesn’t merit action,’’ Gautam Chakravarty, Special IG, Presidency Range, said.

The Inspector In-Charge of Dum Dum police station, where the FIR is supposed to have been lodged, refused to comment on the issue.
