Rejecting a plea to extend police custody for the accused in the PWG case, Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate Court, Midnapore, ordered a new medical board, comprising medical and forensic experts from Presidency General Hospital or Calcutta Medical Hospital, to re-examine them.

The court dismissed a medical report submitted by the government doctor on the medical condition of the accused, Professor Kausik Ganguly, Tinku Ghosh, Parasar Bhattacharya and sent them to judicial custody.

The accused were allegedly tortured soon after arrest at the Baguihati investigation centre. In another development, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya told the Assembly today he had ordered a high-level departmental inquiry by a senior Home Department official into the incident.

His observation, while replying to a supplementary by Congress MLA A. Mitra, came as a big blow to police. ‘‘As I don’t have faith in a police report, I ordered a probe by Special Secretary Home,’’ he said.

Giving reasons for the crackdown, which led to arrest of a teacher of Chemical Engineering Department of the University College of Science and Technology, besides two others accused, he said these crackdowns were conducted on the basis of police investigations. The PWG, he said, has moved into the city in a big way. ‘‘They have formed quite a few committees for urban areas, including Kolkata.’’
