A day after the state government decided to ask private universities to seek affiliations with two existing state universities, police had to be called in at MATS University, run by the Bangalore-based Jain group, as students boycotted classes and raised slogans in the campus. They were seeking assurance from the university on their degrees.Chief Operating Officer of MATS University Yeswanth Raj said the students are against the affiliation move and wanted an assurance from MATS chairman C.R. Jain. ‘‘The chairman met the students and tried to clear their apprehensions. The issue was later resolved,’’ he said. ‘‘We want the state government to take initiative to pass a separate legislation for the private universities meeting the standards. Our students are not prepared for affiliation to any of the universities at Raipur and Bilaspur,’’ Jain said.In New Delhi, Rajiv Tiwari, head of corporate communications, Rai University, said: ‘‘Students will raise questions about receiving a degree from Raipur or Bilaspur University. In the end, we will probably have to issue diplomas. Losing the brand name would definitely cause some discontent among the students.’’
