The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy (PPA) at Phillaur is set to get deemed university status, making it the first such varsity in Asia. Confirming this, PPA Deputy Director Dr D.J. Singh said: ‘‘Punjab has already given no-objection certificate. Now we will apply to the UGC which will recommend the Centre to confer upon us the status of Deemed Police University.’’

On PPA’s chances of getting the status, Dr Singh said: ‘‘We are confident as we fulfill all conditions and criteria set by UGC’’. ‘‘A Deemed University status will help us start new degrees and diplomas for police and non-police officers besides enabling us to award degrees,’’ he added.
