The Punjab government plans to enact a legislation to facilitate contract farming in the state.Admitting to the near-failure of contract farming in Punjab, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today said: ‘‘Whenever any new programme is launched, it’s bound to have inherent bottlenecks and hiccups.’’ He was speaking at a symposium on ‘High Value Agriculture’ organised here today.Punjab, the Chief Minister said, needed re-thinking on the way farming has been carried on all these decades. The paddy-wheat cultivation has not only led to an increase in soil salinity, but the water table has also plumetted. While the farmers are faced with controlled prices today, they have to depend on the Food corporation of India for selling their produce, he added.
