Warning the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) to restrain from unprovoked firing, the Border Security Force has demanded strict action against the personnel involved in the murder of BSF Assistant Commandant Jeevan Kumar along the Tripura border on Saturday.
Speaking to The Indian Express, BSF Director-General R S Mooshahary said, ‘‘We are very unhappy. We have lodged a strong protest with Bangladesh.’’
Jeevan Kumar was allegedly dragged across the Indo-Bangladesh border, beaten up by the villagers there and shot at from a close range by BDR personnel. According to senior BSF officials, Kumar was playing volley ball with his men at the Lankanmura BSF post, when an Indian villager tending to his cattle was dragged across the border by two Bangladeshis.
Kumar then rushed to the border and sought a meeting with his BDR counterpart to secure the villager’s release.
But the BDR personnel refused to inform their company commander and killed him, according to Constable K K Sunderan, who accompanied Kumar. Sunderan also sustained injuries in the attack.
The BDR personnel continued firing for over three hours till about 9 pm, though the BSF exercised restraint, officials said, alleging, the attack was ‘‘pre-planned’’.
While the BDR has maintained that Kumar had strayed across the border, BSF officials said that even the laid down mechanism of holding flag meetings was not adhered to by the BDR in this case.
