PUNE, Dec 2: Pune is all set to exceed its tax collection target by more than Rs 1000 crore in the current year, J M Mehra, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Pune region said today.
Mehra was speaking at the seminar on `Direct Tax Reforms’ organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) here. The seminar was inaugurated by Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes Ravi Kant. Terming tax reform as a continuing process, he said that Pune was leading in the allotment of PAN numbers. We have also succeeded in granting refunds through the electronic clearing facility directly to the bank accounts. Around 18,002 refunds have been issued so far, he said.
In his speech Ravi Kant assured that the department was making every effort to make the IT department user friendly organisation. He said that every endeavor is being made to simplify tax laws and procedures.
B N Kalyani, Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Western region suggested the mechanisation of the department and its working to increase the tax base and felt that many changes were required in the tax structures and laws relating to mergers and acquisitions, closures and restructuring of the industry.
Rules and regulations will be required to govern the e-commerce and knowledge based industry. Chamber president Pratap Pawar also spoke.
