PUNE, March 23: "Act locally, think globally," this slogan which ran prominently in Ghorpadi area perhaps summed up the feelings of the 60-odd senior citizens who had gathered in the wee hours to contribute their mite towards the preservation of the environment.

In perhaps the first unique effort of its kind in the city, seniors from different strata of life came together to form a Senior Citizens’ Morning Club and Evening Road Side Club. These clubs have been formed to develop Alexander Road in Ghorpadi area which falls under the Pune Cantonment.

Says Lt Col Suresh Patil (Retd), founder of the Green Thumb Environment Group who had organised a special function to mark the World Forest Day and the formal inauguration of the two clubs at the hands of Mohan Dharia founder of Vanarai, "This is a totally new concept which is perhaps being tried out by senior citizens for the first time in the country. They plan to put up pigeon holes to encourage birds to visit the area. Not just this, but each senior citizenwill adopt a tree and will be personally responsible for its well-being."

He described this as an effort to to create a thick jungle in the urban wilderness, adding that apart from the 50 trees planted today, more would be planted at a later stage as part of club’s activity. The club has more such activities planned for the future.
