On Friday morning, the city was abuzz with rumours about the death of alleged fake stamp paper racket kingpin, Abdul Karim Telgi. The rumours turned out to be false.

DIG, prisons, Dhanaji Chaudhari said Telgi’s health was perfect. ‘‘Telgi had been taken to Sassoon Hospital for a check-up on Thursday night and the doctors found him in good health. He is very much at the Yerawada Central Prison,’’ Chaudhari said.

Telgi’s lawyer Milind Pawar said when he went inside the jail, police officials were questioning Telgi. ‘‘When I informed Telgi about the rumour, he appeared shocked. Telgi told me he had been taken to Sassoon Hospital on Thursday night, where sonography was carried out on his liver,’’ Pawar said.

‘‘Telgi suspects the rumours might be part of a conspiracy against him,’’ Pawar said, adding, Telgi also wanted to make some changes in the draft of his will, handed over to his lawyer Harshad Nimbalkar last week.

Around 11 am, mediapersons and Nimbalkar started receiving anonymous telephone calls claiming Telgi had died.
