SAS NAGAR, Nov 24: To decongest traffic in Chandigarh, the Punjab Urban Planning and Urban Development Authority (PUDA) is planning to directly connect SAS Nagar with Chandigarh-Ludhiana and Kalka-Patiala highways through a vital link road.
While the road joining Phase-XI of the township is at the planning stage, construction work on the road leading to Belaongi on Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway will be undertaken in the current financial year. The link road will start from Belaongi on Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway and culminate somewhere between Zirakpur and Banur on the Kalka-Patiala highway passing through Phase-VII, Industrial Area, Sectors 70, 69, Phase-XI and Jagatpura village.
With the completion of the road, all SAS Nagar-bound traffic from Delhi and Ludhiana will reach their respective destinations without touching Chandigarh.
When contacted, PUDA Additional Chief Administrator Seema Jain said that a causeway will be constructed soon near Belaongi village at Patiala Rao ki Choe, plans for which have been finalised and submitted to the Finance and Accounts Committee of the PUDA for its approval. It will cost PUDA more than Rs 2 crore.
“Construction work on the causeway will start as soon as the plan is approved by the head office”, Seema Jaid said. A bridge on the road dividing Sectors 68 and 69 has already been built at the cost of Rs 3 crore to pave the way for its extension up to Belaongi. The bridge was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Industries Sukhbir Singh Badal on November 15.
Seema Jain said that the link road would be very convenient for both rural and urban residents of the Mohali sub-division who would be able to travel between Delhi and Ludhiana without touching Chandigarh where they have to pass through several security checks.
