PUNE, Oct 13: The Sassoon hospital authorities have started psychiatric treatment and counselling for the Shiv Sena worker and transporter, who tried to commit suicide after murdering his wife, three daughters and a son at their residence at Kasewadi slums in Bhavani Peth area on Sunday night.

The decision on the treatment to the 30-year-old transporter, Raju Sakharam Patole, was taken after he repeatedly expressed his resolve to end his life.

Raju, who believed that he was HIV-infected, allegedly bashed the heads of his wife Seetabai, daughters Aarti (8), Kirti (4), Prachi (2) and son Ashwin (6) with a grinding stone while they were fast asleep. He tried to end his life by swallowing 15 to 20 tablets of Vicks Action 500, and by stabbing himself with a pair of scissors.

The transporter has been showing symptoms of mental trauma ever since the incident took place. While he was being shifted to the hospital, he kept on telling his relatives that come what may he would end his life. He repeated the same with hospital authorities and police officials, said deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Chandrakant Ughade. The police have deployed three constables to ensure that he does not attempt suicide again. The police have requested the Sassoon authorities to conduct tests to determine if Patole is HIV-infected. Blood sample of Patole’s wife have been taken for HIV tests after Raju said he rarely used condoms.

Patole recorded a statement before the police confessing to the crime. “My sole intention was to ensure that they did not suffer after my death. I know the hardships faced by orphans as I lost my father at early age and was brought up by my uncle. I did not want my children to face the problem,” Patole told police officials. “I was thinking over it for a long time. I made up my mind on Sunday afternoon. We had gone to admit my ailing aunt to a private hospital in Salisbury Park area when my cousin Laxman suggested that I should start treatment. However, I said enough is enough. That was when I took the drastic decision,” he said.

Patole said the last thought he had while attempting suicide was of his mother. “I missed her and thought that I had not spent much time with her. My wish was to live with her, which was never fulfilled as I spent my childhood with my uncle,” he said. Patole said he did not tell anybody that he was HIV-infected. “How can one reveal it? I was all by myself when the medicos told me in 1995 that I was HIV-infected. I just walked out of the hospital, tore the test reports and told the family that I was suffering from blood cancer.” He claimed that he was told by a doctor that he would die within five years.

“I was aware that AIDS was a sexually transmitted disease so I started having safe sex with my wife. However, I got fed up and stopped using condoms after some days,” he added.
