NEW DELHI, MARCH 25: Having found the Centre’s reaction to the air strikes against Yugoslavia a trifle mild, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that the Central Government strongly condemn the attacks and press for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Expressing his dismay over the so-called "sober and restrained" reaction of the Government of India to the air strike, CPI Secretary General, A B Bardhan, said the action was in total violation of international law and the United Nations charter.

"One should remember there are problems like Kosovo in many countries, including India. But they are internal affairs of those countries," Bardhan said, in a statement issued here.

Reacting to the decision to resort to military strikes, the BJP government had on Wednesday called for a resolution of the dispute through consultation and dialogue, while underscoring that the UN Charter clearly stipulates that no enforcement action can be taken under regional arrangements without the clearance of the Security Council.

The CPI, in its criticism of the air strikes, said under the cover of NATO, the United States was "arrogating to itself the authority to launch military action against another country".

This "cannot and should not be tolerated", Bardhan said, adding that the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has repeatedly reminded the US and its NATO allies of this fact.
