NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 13: The Government on Monday ordered a high-level probe into the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl, Jyotsna, who was killed after she got entangled in an escalator at the Indira Gandhi International airport.

The two-member inquiry committee of S H Khan, Executive Director, and K Ramalingam, General Manager, Engineering (Electrical), has been asked to investigate the cause of the accident and suggest measures to avoid its recurrence and submit its report within 48 hours to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Civil Aviation Minister Sharad Yadav, who inspected the site of the accident, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs five lakhs to the girl’s family, an AAI release said.

Yadav, along with Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chaman Lal Gupta, AAI Chairman D V Gupta and other senior officers, met the girl’s mother and other family members and expressed their deep regret and condolences on the tragedy.

It was reported that the bag of a passenger ahead of Jyotsna got stuck in the escalator due to which the child could not get off the escalator on her way down. She tumbled and was declared dead by the AAI doctor who rushed to the scene.
