CHANDIGARH, June 14: Alleging irregularities in the allotment of tenders for printing of ballot papers for panchayat elections in Punjab, the Punjab and Chandigarh Printers Association has demanded an independent inquiry into the matter.

Addressing the media person here today, the association members demanded bringing to book the persons responsible for the “episode” which, they claimed, would result in losses to the state.

They claimed that the allotment of tender for printing of ballot papers to a Delhi firm would cost the state exchequer a loss of about Rs 2 crore.

The loss to the state on account of TAs and DAs, that would accrue to the tune of lakhs as the employees would be required to travel for supervision of the printing, the printers alleged, while demanding adequte security for printing in Delhi. The printers alleged that they had been discriminated against the Delhi firm at the time of allotment of the tender. They also alleged that to increase the rate of printing of each ballot paper, certain conditions were imposed on them, which were uncalled for.

The local printers have also stated that each of them was made to incur extra expenses of Rs 2 to 3 lakh for fulfilling various formalities in printing of ballot papers.
