Wimbledon: History beckons Roger Federer,Serena Williams

Williams is peerless as no one looks capable enough to prevent her from equaling Federer's record.

Every year,on the third Monday of June, the most distinguished tennis players in the world assemble in a suburb of the South West London to mark the dawn of the most celebrated tournament in the history of the sport- the Wimbledon Championships. Each of them aspires to win at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which has been hosting the renowned tournament since its inception in 1877. Undoubtedly, the grass court Grand Slam has evolved over a span of 136 years, yet some traditions still persist. The strict white dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage are a protocol in London.

Like every year, the tournament is star-studded in its 2013 edition. This coliseum of dreams has witnessed the glorious history of tennis and it is once again ready to blow our minds away with an exorbitant panorama of tennis We take this opportunity to bring to you the best five in the business, who will be sweating it out to lift this year’s most eluded title.

ROGER FEDERER

Experienced, headstrong, quick, smooth, sophisticated, elegant, versatile, accurate, magical, unbelievable can’t be enough to describe the brilliant shot-maker known as Roger Federer. With five consecutive Wimbledon titles (2003-2007) and seven in all (2009 and 2012),it won’t be an exaggeration to call him the ‘undisputed king’ of Wimbledon. The reigning champion is on the quest for his 8th Wimbledon prerogative and has proved time and again that he is far from finished as a paramount force in men’s tennis. If Federer manages to stay fit,it won’t be a surprise to see the man destined for greatness, lift his 18th Grand Slam -10 years on from his first Wimbledon title.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

The current world number 1,with super-human athleticism,is the front runner to win this year’s Wimbledon, since his nemesis Rafael Nadal perished in the 1st round. With the best backhand in world tennis, the Djoker has come to the tournament with 33-5 winning record and three titles under his best this year. Universally adored for his ability to woo the crowds, the 2011 champion has enough arsenals to produce every shot under the sun. The constant contender in all Grand Slams,Novak Djokovic has no flaw whatsoever from a tactical standpoint and possesses the necessary expertise to add yet another title to a glittering career.

ANDY MURRAY

Known for his counter punches and ability to manipulate the pace of his ground strokes,Andy Murray remains Britain’s lone solicitant to end their wait for glory at Wimbledon. The defensive player has never won his home championship, although in 2012 he won his first Grand Slam Title at the US Open with a crushing victory over Novak Djokovic. Being the first Brit to win an Olympics gold,Murray will try to continue his dream run this year as well. Often criticised for his poor second serve and lack of aggression,Murray is expected to mesmerise his home crowd with the best tennis of his career.

SERENA WILLIAMS

It all began for Serena Williams 12 months ago when she stepped up to take the prestigious Venus Rosewater Dish on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Riding on her career-best winning streak of 32 straight matches, the younger Williams is an obvious pick to win her sixth Wimbledon, and second in a row. With an ability to serve at a consistent 120 mph,Williams is a force to reckon with. The oldest woman world number one has begun the crusade for her career’s 17th Grand Slam title. And,it seems apparent that she is peerless as no one looks capable enough to prevent her from equaling Federer’s record.

MARIA SHARAPOVA

Maria Sharapova has had a great comeback after the recovery from her shoulder injury, but she hasn’t found a way to win on grass. The Russian’s grass-court game hasn’t evolved as effectively as her stint on clay. Despite her great serve and stinging return, the world’s highest-paid female athlete’s Wimbledon winning percentage isn’t something to cheer about. With Williams charging towards the title like a raging bull, the 2004 champion,Sharapova will have to ante her grass court skills by any means to break her foe.
