Webber leads Bull run at German GP

Red Bull’s Mark Webber won his first Formula One race on Sunday after overcoming a penalty to take the German Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber won his first Formula One race on Sunday after overcoming a penalty to take the German Grand Prix. The Australian beat team mate Sebastian Vettel by 9.2 seconds despite a drive-through penalty for bumping Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello out of the start while defending his pole position. Webber’s euphoric screams were heard over the team radio after he crossed the finish line in his 132nd race. “It’s an incredible day for me. I wanted to win so badly,” said Webber, the first Australian driver to secure victory since Alan Jones at Las Vegas 28 years ago.

Felipe Massa gave Ferrari their first podium finish of the season by coming third ahead of Nico Rosberg of Williams. F1 leader Jenson Button of Brawn GP finished fifth to take his overall total to 68 points, while Vettel moved into second with 47 points and Webber is third with 45.5 points. It was the second straight 1-2 for the Austrian team and third overall after nine races as momentum continued to shift toward Red Bull after Button had looked set to run away with the title following Brawn’s six wins in the first seven races. It was the first time this season that Brawn GP failed to finish on the podium. Fernando Alonso finished seventh for Renault and Heikki Kovalainen took eighth for McLaren.

Barrichello rages on team

Rubens Barrichello accused his Brawn GP team of losing him the German Grand Prix in an extraordinary outburst. “I’m terribly upset with the way things went,” said the veteran, who led at the first corner but ended up sixth and behind his championship-leading team mate Jenson Button at the finish. “I did all I had to do. I went first on the first corner and then they made me lose the race,” said Barrichello. “I wish I could get on the plane and go home. I don’t want to talk to anyone in the team.” Team principal Ross Brawn said his driver had been speaking in the heat of the moment and before he was fully informed of the facts.

Sutil unlucky again

Kimi Raikkonen dashed Adrian Sutil’s fairytale home race as Force India came agonisingly close to scoring their first Formula One points before falling to the jinx at the German Grand Prix. In a repeat of last year’s Monaco Grand Prix,Raikkonen bruised Sutil’s VJM02 just when the German, running second, was coming out of the pit and knocked off the front wing to force a pit-stop that dashed Sutil’s point hopes. The German finished 15th while team mate Giancarlo Fisichella ended 11th.

Last year too,Raikkonen had rammed his Ferrari onto Sutil’s car in Monaco where the German was running fourth and was just four laps away from the team’s maiden F1 points before his race came to a sorry end. Starting seventh on the grid, his and the team’s best position ever,Sutil ran a steady race and was running second when he pitted after 27 laps. As he was coming out of the pit to rejoin the race,Sutil could only watch as Raikkonen’s car brushed his VJM02 and took the front wing with it.
