Washout and the whitewash

First ODI at Kochi abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy rain

Donning the latest shade of Team India blue, they were expected to douse the Nehru Stadium with a strong tinge of patriotism on Sunday. And even the numerous rain threats that surrounded the first ODI couldn’t deter the diehard supporters from thronging the ground and creating a boisterous atmosphere.

While the match was never expected to start at its scheduled time of 9 am — with overnight rains having further dampened the chances of any play—- there were a few optimistic signs as the sun shone brightly early in the morning at Kochi.

But all it took to seal the fate of the opening game of the three-match ODI series between India and Australia was a light drizzle in addition to the ground being surrounded by dark clouds. And almost within two hours of their excited arrival, the thousands clad in blue were back on the street and trying to make last-minute plans to spend the rest of their holiday.

Unfortunately, for all their efforts, they weren’t even afforded a glimpse of their favourite cricketers, with both teams staying put at their hotel.

Incidentally, the last scheduled ODI between the two nations,in November, too ended in a no-result with rains playing havoc and ensuring a wash-out at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai,as the plush stadium prepared to host its first-ever international match.

The next stop for India and Australia will be Vishakapatnam, another southern coastal town, which has reported quite a bit of rainfall over the last few days. And not only the members of the two teams, even the blue-brigade will have their fingers crossed hoping for the action to get underway on Wednesday.
