US soldier sentenced to 6 years for rape in SKorea

United States has 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea.

A Seoul court has sentenced an American soldier to six years in prison for raping a teenage South Korean girl last year.

The Seoul Central District Court’s sentencing of Pvt. Kevin Robinson on Wednesday follows the sentencing in November of another US private to 10 years in prison for a similar crime.

The two cases rekindled anti-American sentiments in South Korea and prompted US officials to apologize. The United States has 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea.

US Forces Korea says it’s checking whether Robinson intends to appeal.

The court also ordered the soldier’s personal information be disclosed on a South Korean government website for 10 years. It cited the victim’s age as a reason to warn the public.
