UN panel asks Britain to suspend traveler eviction

Panel asks authorities to provide appropriate alternative accommodation to the travelers before moving them.

A UN human rights panel has called on Britain to suspend the planned eviction of 86 families from an illegal travelers camp east of London.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said Friday it regretted that local authorities wanted to proceed with the eviction of Irish travelers from Dale Farm.

It says the authorities should provide “culturally appropriate alternative accommodation” to the travelers before moving them.

Irish travelers have similar lifestyles but are ethnically distinct from Gypsies, who are also known as Roma.

A British court on Wednesday rejected a last-ditch attempt to prevent the families from being evicted from the site.

The Geneva-based panel can only issue observations and make recommendations to countries.
