Obama has today asked for an increase in NATO troops in Afghanistan it may well be the case that this increase might not materialise. The aim of NATO in Afghanistan was to aid with reconstruction and recovery as is obvious,Afghanistan is neither currently in either of those two stages: the Taliban are quickly gaining control.
Its become a daily affair hearing of unfortunate number of dead and x number of Taliban killed in some sort of US drone air strike. Speaking at Davos both the Afghani and Pakistani ministers said that missile attacks is counterproductive. Afghanistan needs a change in strategy; the most popular one currently would be to replicate the Sons of Iraq strategy,which led to success in the Iraq war.
Complications are soon to arise due to a delay in elections in Afghanistan from May to August 20. There is rationale behind the delay,currently the country is abysmally monitored and the Taliban gain more footholds day by day. It appears as though there is a desire to hold back elections until a more favourable climate. The key here is to ensure that despite the delay Karzai whose term is due to end in April – does not leave a power vacuum.
