Helping Spain win the Davis Cup and having a Christmas chat with Andre Agassi in Las Vegas boosted Fernando Verdasco’s confidence ahead of his victory over Andy Murray.

“I think that that Davis Cup final made me much stronger mentally. And this pre-season,I was working really hard,” Verdasco told reporters. “So today,I was really believing in myself that I can win the match. That’s so important (to) believe in yourself. I think today I was believing in myself much more than in Paris last year”,he added, referring to one of his previous five defeats by Murray. “The confidence for me right now is much bigger than in Paris. Physically and mentally also much stronger.”

Verdasco sealed the Davis Cup last year for Spain when he won the fourth rubber against Argentina’s Jose Acasuso, then spent the off-season training in Las Vegas with Agassi’s former fitness coach Gil Reyes. “I am so happy to be working with him. I learned so much,” said Verdasco. “Agassi came to say hi to me,and I was speaking with him … for two hours before he left for the mountains. I don’t want to say what he told me,because that’s secret, but it really helped me so much.”

Verdasco added that when he took the court he had not even thought of his previous record against Murray, where he had won just one set in five matches. “I was believing in myself because I feel so good,” he said. “But I was just thinking about me,my game,to try to beat him,and didn’t think if I was 5-0 in matches or anything else. I had a very good day.”
