Amir loses Yorkshire contract
Mohammad Amir’s alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal has cost him a 100,000 pounds contract with English county side Yorkshire. The 18-year-old,who flew back to Pakistan with Butt and Asif,was Yorkshire’s choice to be overseas player for 2011. “But the plan was scuppered as soon as Amir was charged by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit,” The Sun reported. Former batsman Geoffrey Boycott,who is a global talent spotter for Yorkshire,had suggested Aamir’s name.
Mayweather Jr arrested
U.S. boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. was arrested on Friday in Las Vegas on suspicion of grand larceny and domestic battery after an ex-girlfriend accused him of beating her in front of their children,according to police and court documents. Mayweather,33,who is undefeated in 41 bouts and widely regarded as the best defensive fighter of his generation,was jailed in the Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $3,000 bail,Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said.
Bopanna-Qureshi for charity tie
Pakistan Tennis Federation is planning to organise a series of tennis matches featuring the Indo-Pak pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi to raise funds for the victims of the devastating floods. PTF president Dilawar Abbas said the growing popularity of the pair in both countries would help raise much needed funds for the flood victims. Abbas said the PTF would also request Sania Mirza to be present for the matches as she is also a popular figure in Pakistan.
Ministry clears tennis players dues
The payment row that threatened to derail India’s tennis campaign in the upcoming Commonwealth Games was resolved with the government approving Rs one crore for five elite players. “The government has sanctioned Rs one crore and the players will get this money within the next week. Leander Paes will get Rs 19.26 lakh,Mahesh Bhupathi 19.62 lakh,Rohan Bopanna 18.33 lakh,Somdev Devvarman 25.88 lakh and Sania Mirza Rs 17.52 lakh,” Rahul Bhatnagar of International Sports Division said. “As far as ministry is concerned,the matter is over now,” he added.
Brazil aim to break Davis Cup jinx
Brazil has been missing the chances of returning to World Group of Davis Cup since 2003 but they are determined to break the jinx this time when lock horn with India in the World Play-off tie commencing from September 17. “We are ready to break the jinx of having missed out on the chances since 2003. We have this classic situation about hard court performance. This time we have very good players. Our strategy is to get five points from this tie,” Brazil captain Joao Zwetsch said.
Shiv Kapur in joint lead
Shiv Kapur put himself in contention for his maiden European Tour title after jumping into joint lead with a steady two-under 68 in the second round of the KLM Open golf tournament in Hilversum (Netherlands). Bhullar slips to tied fourth
Gaganjeet Bhullar remained in the hunt for a strong finish although he slipped a couple of rungs to tied fourth after returning a modest two-under 70 in the third and penultimate round of the USD 400,000 Handa Singapore Classic. Bhullar,a two-time Asian Tour champion,has a total of 14-under 202 and is six strokes behind leader Peter Karmis (70) of South Africa.
Sarita wins in World Boxing
Former champion L Sarita Devi’s triumph in the opening round of the flyweight (51kg) category was the lone bright spot on a largely disappointing day for Indian boxers at the sixth Women’s World Championships. Sarita defeated Russia’s Alexandra Kuleshova 11-8 and will now face Yazici Sumeyra of Turkey on Sunday. In 64kg opening round,Pratibha Jakhar was out-classed by American Jackson Cashmere.
NADA rules out systematic doping
India’s top doping official says although 12 Indian athletes have tested positive for the same stimulant methylhexanamine within one week at several training camps,that doesn’t necessarily mean there has been systematic doping. National Anti Doping Agency director-general Rahul Bhatnagar said Saturday that “nothing can be established other than it being a matter of chance.”
