Santoshi bags bronze
India opened their medal account in Asian Junior Weightlifting championships with Matsa Santoshi bagging bronze medals in the womens 48kg on the first day of the competition in Tashkent. Santoshi lifted 71kg in snatch and 85kg in clean and jerk for a total of 156kg to tie with a Kazakh weightlifter,but had to settle for bronze in the aggregate as she was 200gm heavier. India are being represented by 12 lifters in the meet.
Sandhu advances
Harinder Pal Sandhu was the lone Indian to enter the final of the qualifying round of PSA Indian Challenger No 7 Squash tournament in Kolkata. Sandhu beat Naresh Kumar 13-11 11-4 10-12 11-7. Ritwik Bhattacharya,Sandeep Jangra,Vivek Dinodia,Gaurav Nandrajog,Ravi Dixit,Ramit Tandon,Abhishek Pradhan failed to clear the preliminary hurdle.
Van Persie to return
Robin van Persie is back in the Arsenal squad for Wednesdays match against Tottenham after five months on the sidelines. The striker injured ankle ligaments in November while on international duty,but returned to full training last week. He lacks a bit of match practice but when I pick a player it means hes fit and sharp, Wenger said.
Serena gets wild card
Top-ranked Serena Williams has asked for and received a wild card for next months Italian Open,a warm-up tournament for the French Open,signaling shes ready to return from a knee injury that has sidelined her since winning the Australian Open in January.
Briatore out of F1 till 2013
Flavio Briatore has agreed to have no part in F1 until 2013 after the sports governing body accepted the former Renault team principals offer to end an appeal of his lifetime ban. Briatore was sanctioned for ordering a driver to crash his car.
